As an employee, you're probably wondering how many miles you'll be paid when you go to submit a report. This all depends on your company's commute deduction policy. A commute is the roundtrip distance from your home to your place of work. Your commute is then subtracted from your total daily mileage (gross mileage) to make up your total net mileage.
There are two types of commute policies that your company can choose from, 'Daily' and 'First and Last'. The commute type defines how the commute is deducted from your total mileage for the day. Check out our article Commute for Drivers to learn how each type is deducted.
Now to learn how to see your commute deduction policy, select your device and follow the steps below:
Step 1: Go to 'Settings' in the top right corner of your screen.
Step 2: Select 'Profile & Settings' from the side menu.
Step 3: Select 'Commute'.
Step 4: From here you can review your commute amount and type. Below are a few examples of what you might see:
Locked Commute - Daily Deduction
Imagine your daily commute is set at 20 miles by your admin—this amount is locked and can’t be changed. Here’s how it works:
- Scenario 1: You log 50 miles in a day. With 20 miles deducted as your commute, you’re left with 30 miles eligible for reimbursement.
- Scenario 2: What if you only log 15 miles for the day? No need to worry—your total mileage will be adjusted to 0, not a negative number like -5.
Locked Commute - First and Last Trip Deduction:
Let’s say your commute is set to 20 miles, split evenly between your first and last trips. Here’s how it works:
- First Trip: You drive 12 miles. With 10 miles deducted for the commute, you still have 2 miles left for reimbursement.
- Last Trip: You drive 8 miles. Since the 10-mile commute deduction is higher, the trip adjusts to 0—no negative numbers like -2!
Unlocked Commute:
In this scenario, the commute is unlocked, allowing you to manually enter your commute mileage and tap Save.
Example: You enter 15 miles as your commute.
-
If the commute type is set to "Daily"
- 15 miles will be deducted from your total daily mileage.
-
If the commute type is set to "First and Last":
- 7.5 miles will be deducted from your first trip.
- 7.5 miles will be deducted from your last trip.
Step 1: Log in to your Team Dashboard.
Step 2: From the home screen, click on 'Settings'.
Step 3: Scroll down until you find 'Commute Distance'.
